Average interstitial velocity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003740

The mean speed at which a fluid, such as air or water, moves through the pore spaces of a porous medium like a snowpack or soil. It is calculated by dividing the specific discharge, also known as the Darcy flux, by the effective porosity of the medium. This velocity is a key parameter in modeling heat and mass transfer within snow, affecting processes like snow metamorphism and meltwater percolation.
