Specific discharge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009091

The volume flow rate of water through a unit cross-sectional area of a porous medium, such as soil or an aquifer. Also known as Darcy velocity, it represents a macroscopic, averaged velocity rather than the actual speed of water particles moving through pores. Specific discharge is calculated using Darcy's Law and is a fundamental quantity in hydrogeology and land-surface models, expressed in units of velocity like meters per day.
