Permeability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002020

  1. The property of a porous medium, such as soil or snowpack, that quantifies the ability of a fluid like water or air to flow through it under a pressure gradient. It is an intrinsic property of the medium's structure, dependent on the size, shape, and connectedness of the pores. Permeability is measured in units of area, such as square meters or the non-SI unit darcy, where 1 darcy is approximately 0.987 × 10⁻¹² m².

  2. In hydrologic terms, the ability of a material to transmit fluid through its pores when subjected to a difference in head.
