Stream gauging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009310

The process of measuring the discharge, or volume of water flowing past a specific point in a stream or river per unit of time. This involves determining the cross-sectional area of the channel and the average velocity of the water. Common methods include using current meters, weirs, or acoustic Doppler current profilers, with results often expressed in cubic meters per second or cubic feet per second.
