Constant-rate dilution gauging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004624

A method for measuring water flow rate in a channel or stream by injecting a chemical or fluorescent tracer at a constant rate. The flow discharge is calculated based on the degree to which the stream's flow dilutes the tracer's concentration, which is measured at a downstream point after complete mixing has occurred. This technique is particularly suited for turbulent, high-gradient streams where traditional current-meter methods are difficult or unsafe to implement.
