Standard depth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010782

A pre-determined, internationally agreed-upon depth in a body of water at which oceanographic or limnological measurements are taken. Using standard depths for sampling temperature, salinity, and other properties allows for consistent data collection and facilitates the comparison and analysis of water column profiles from different times and locations. Common standard depths include the surface (0 m), 10 m, 20 m, 50 m, 100 m, and continue at increasing intervals into the deep ocean.
