Reduction of pressure to a standard level

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008469

The mathematical adjustment of observed atmospheric pressure readings from a station's actual elevation to a common reference level, typically mean sea level. This procedure removes the influence of topography, allowing for the direct comparison of pressure values across different geographical locations. The reduction is performed using a standard atmospheric model or a virtual column of air between the station and the reference level.
