Mass convergence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007131

The net inflow of air mass into a given atmospheric volume, resulting in an increase in air density within that volume. This process is associated with rising motion in the atmosphere, as the accumulated air must ascend to maintain hydrostatic balance. Mass convergence at the surface is a characteristic feature of low-pressure systems and cyclonic development.
