Divergence theorem

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005086

A mathematical theorem, also known as Gauss's theorem, that connects the outward flow of a vector field across a closed surface to the behavior of the field inside the surface. It states that the surface integral of the normal component of a vector field over a closed surface equals the volume integral of the divergence over the region enclosed. The theorem is used in atmospheric science to relate mass flux into a volume of air to changes in air density within it.
