Taylor's theorem
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009509
A mathematical theorem that approximates a function by a polynomial whose coefficients are determined by the function's derivatives at a single point. This theorem is widely used in atmospheric science for linearizing complex equations, such as those governing atmospheric motion, to simplify analysis or for numerical methods. It forms the basis for finite difference approximations.
