Taylor's diffusion theorem
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009507
A fundamental theorem in turbulent diffusion that relates the mean square displacement of a particle in a turbulent flow to the Lagrangian autocorrelation function of its velocity. This theorem provides a theoretical framework for understanding how pollutants or tracers disperse in the atmosphere and oceans. It shows that for short times, dispersion is proportional to time squared, and for long times, it is linear with time.
