Helmholtz's theorem
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006226
A fundamental theorem in vector calculus that states any sufficiently smooth, rapidly decaying vector field can be uniquely decomposed into the sum of an irrotational (curl-free) component and a solenoidal (divergence-free) component. In meteorology, this theorem is applied to decompose atmospheric velocity fields into their divergent and rotational parts, aiding in the analysis of atmospheric flow.
