Taylor's hypothesis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009508

A simplifying assumption in turbulence research that states that the temporal variations observed by a fixed sensor are primarily due to the advection of a frozen turbulent field past the sensor by the mean flow. This allows for the conversion of temporal statistics into spatial statistics. It is valid when the mean flow speed is much greater than the turbulent fluctuations.
