Ergodic condition
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005464
A property of a dynamical system where the time average of a quantity along a single, long trajectory is equal to the average of that quantity over the entire space of possible states. In climate science, this assumption allows long-term simulations from a single model run to represent the statistical properties of the climate system. The ergodic hypothesis underlies the practice of using temporal averages from climate models to infer the system's overall statistical behavior.
