Ergodicity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005465
A property of a stochastic process where the time average of a single realization of the process is equal to the ensemble average over all possible realizations. In atmospheric science, this concept is sometimes applied to climate models, suggesting that a sufficiently long simulation of a single model run can represent the statistical properties of the climate system. However, the atmosphere's inherent non-linearity and chaotic nature often limit the strict applicability of ergodicity.
