Finite-difference approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005587

A mathematical expression that estimates the derivative of a function at a point using the values of the function at nearby discrete points. This approximation forms the basis for solving differential equations numerically in atmospheric and oceanic models. Common types include forward, backward, and central difference approximations, each with varying levels of accuracy.
