Optical thickness
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007716
A dimensionless quantity that describes the extent to which a medium attenuates electromagnetic radiation due to absorption and scattering. It is the integral of the extinction coefficient along the path of radiation. A higher optical thickness indicates greater attenuation, such as that observed in dense clouds or aerosol layers.
