Rayleigh number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008423
A dimensionless number that quantifies the ratio of buoyancy forces to viscous and thermal diffusive forces within a fluid. It is used to predict the onset of natural convection in a fluid layer heated from below. In atmospheric science, a critical Rayleigh number indicates when thermal convection will begin in a layer of air.
