Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008683

The process by which electromagnetic radiation, such as sunlight or radar waves, is redirected in multiple directions upon encountering particles or irregularities in a medium. This redirection occurs without a change in the wavelength of the radiation. Atmospheric scattering by air molecules and aerosols is responsible for the blue color of the sky and the white appearance of clouds.
