Dark lightning

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004857

A phenomenon involving bursts of high-energy gamma rays produced during thunderstorms, which are invisible to the human eye. These terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are thought to be generated by strong electric fields accelerating electrons to relativistic speeds, which then collide with air molecules. They are a form of high-energy atmospheric radiation.
