Dark adaptation

The process by which the human eye increases its sensitivity to light in low-illumination conditions, involving changes in the photoreceptors of the retina. In meteorology, this concept is relevant for observers making visual assessments of atmospheric phenomena at night, such as aurorae or faint cloud features. Full dark adaptation can take 30 minutes or more.
