The absence or near absence of visible light, typically referring to periods of nighttime or conditions of heavy cloud cover or dense fog. In atmospheric optics, it describes environments where illumination levels are insufficient for photopic vision. This state influences atmospheric processes such as photochemical reactions and boundary layer development.
