Ionizing radiation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006130

Any form of radiation, consisting of either particles or electromagnetic waves, that carries sufficient energy to detach electrons from atoms or molecules, thereby creating ions. This includes alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, X-rays, and high-energy ultraviolet radiation. The threshold for ionization varies by substance but is generally considered to be energies above 10 electron volts (eV).
