Alpenglow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003453
A reddish or pinkish glow observed on mountain peaks and high clouds around sunrise or sunset. This phenomenon occurs when sunlight, already reddened by scattering in the lower atmosphere, illuminates the upper portions of mountains or clouds from below the horizon. The color results from the longer path length of sunlight through the atmosphere, scattering away shorter blue wavelengths.
