Alpine glacier
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003456
A mass of ice that forms in mountainous regions, confined within valleys or cirques, and flows downslope under its own weight. These glaciers originate from the accumulation and compaction of snow at high elevations, carving out distinctive U-shaped valleys and other glacial landforms. They are a key indicator of climate change, with many experiencing retreat globally.
