Cirque glacier

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010431

A body of ice that forms in and occupies a cirque, which is a bowl-shaped, amphitheater-like hollow on a mountainside. These glaciers are typically found at the head of a mountain valley and are the starting point for larger valley glaciers. The erosional processes of a cirque glacier, such as plucking and abrasion, are responsible for carving out and deepening its characteristic basin.
