Hanging glacier

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006165

A body of ice situated on a steep mountainside, often within a cirque or alcove above a larger valley glacier. It does not extend to the valley floor, appearing to 'hang' on the slope. Instability can lead to icefalls and avalanches, which contribute mass to the glacier system below or pose a hazard.
