Hanging dam

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006164

An accumulation of ice, snow, or debris that obstructs a river channel or mountain gully, impounding water behind it. These blockages frequently form during spring thaws when river ice breaks up or after avalanches deposit large amounts of material. The sudden collapse of a hanging dam can release a torrent of water, causing a severe flash flood downstream.
