Ice jam

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001361

  1. An accumulation of broken ice pieces that obstructs the flow of a river or waterway. This phenomenon often occurs during spring thaws when ice breaks up and is carried downstream, sometimes leading to localized flooding as water backs up behind the blockage. Ice jams can also form during freeze-up when frazil ice accumulates.

  2. In hydrologic terms, a stationary accumulation that restricts or blocks streamflow.
