Ice island

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006419

An extremely large, tabular piece of floating ice that has calved from an Arctic ice shelf, such as those along the coast of Ellesmere Island. These massive formations are much thicker (30 to 50 meters) and more stable than ordinary sea ice, allowing them to persist for many years. Their slow drift in the Arctic Ocean has enabled their use as platforms for scientific research stations.
