Piedmont glacier
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007942
A type of glacier that flows out of a steep, confined valley onto a broad, relatively flat plain or piedmont area, where it spreads out into a wide, lobe-shaped mass. This expansion occurs as the glacier is no longer constrained by the valley walls, allowing it to spread laterally. The Malaspina Glacier in Alaska is a prominent example of a piedmont glacier.
