Atomic number

A fundamental property of a chemical element, defined as the total count of protons found within the nucleus of an atom of that element. This number, symbolized by Z, uniquely identifies each element and determines its position in the periodic table. For a neutral atom, the atomic number also equals the number of electrons orbiting the nucleus.
