Quasigeostrophic current
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008243
A flow in the atmosphere or ocean that is in approximate geostrophic balance, but with small departures that allow for vertical motion and changes in the flow pattern. This type of current is described by the quasigeostrophic equations, which filter out high-frequency gravity waves. It represents the large-scale, slowly evolving circulation patterns observed in mid-latitudes.
