Shallow water approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008821

A set of simplifying assumptions used in fluid dynamics to model wave propagation in a fluid layer where the wavelength is significantly greater than the fluid depth. This approximation assumes that the vertical velocity component is negligible and that pressure is hydrostatic. It is widely applied to ocean tides, tsunamis, and atmospheric gravity waves in certain conditions.
