Shallow low

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008820

A low-pressure system with a cyclonic circulation that is confined to the lower part of the troposphere. The circulation weakens and disappears with increasing altitude, showing little or no reflection in the upper-level wind patterns. These systems are contrasted with deep, baroclinic cyclones that extend throughout the troposphere, such as mature mid-latitude cyclones.
