Inclination of the axis of a cyclone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006474

The departure from vertical of the central axis of a cyclonic circulation system as it extends upward through the atmosphere. In developing mid-latitude cyclones, the axis of the low-pressure center typically tilts westward with increasing altitude, placing the upper-level trough behind the surface low. This westward tilt with height is a characteristic feature of baroclinic systems that are intensifying.
