Thermal vorticity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009594

The component of atmospheric vorticity that arises from horizontal temperature gradients, reflecting the vertical shear of the geostrophic wind. It is directly related to the thermal wind and indicates regions where temperature advection is occurring. Positive thermal vorticity often corresponds to areas of cyclonic development.
