Turbulent flow

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003954

A fluid flow regime characterized by chaotic, random fluctuations and eddies, rather than the smooth, parallel layers of laminar flow. It occurs at high velocities and low viscosities, where inertial forces dominate over viscous forces. The transition from laminar to turbulent flow in pipes is predicted by the Reynolds number, with values above approximately 4000 indicating fully turbulent conditions.
