Critical rate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000890

The flow rate at which the flow of a fluid in a pipe or annulus changes from laminar to turbulent. Whether flow is laminar or turbulent follows from the Reynolds number, which depends on fluid density, viscosity, velocity, and the flow geometry. Pumping above this rate gives turbulent flow, which raises frictional pressure loss and erodes the wellbore wall more.
