Supercritical flow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009406

A flow regime in a fluid where the flow velocity exceeds the speed of a small amplitude wave in that medium, analogous to supersonic flow in gases. In meteorology, this concept can apply to atmospheric flows over topography, where the Froude number is greater than one. It is characterized by disturbances propagating only downstream.
