Supercooling

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009405

The process by which a liquid is cooled below its freezing point without solidifying. This phenomenon occurs when there are no suitable ice nuclei or impurities present to initiate the formation of ice crystals. In the atmosphere, supercooling is common for water droplets in clouds, which can remain liquid at temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius.
