Mach number

The ratio of an object's speed to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium. In atmospheric science, it is used to characterize the flow regime of aircraft or atmospheric waves, indicating whether the flow is subsonic, transonic, or supersonic. A Mach number greater than 1 indicates supersonic speed.
