Hypersonic

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006382

Describing speeds that are five or more times the speed of sound, or Mach 5. In atmospheric science, this regime is relevant for objects re-entering Earth's atmosphere from space or for very high-speed atmospheric flight. The flow characteristics around an object at hypersonic speeds differ significantly from supersonic or subsonic regimes due to strong shock waves and high temperatures.
