Local Mach number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007015
The ratio of the local flow velocity of a fluid to the local speed of sound in that fluid. This dimensionless quantity indicates whether the flow is subsonic, sonic, or supersonic at a specific point within a fluid dynamic system. It is a key parameter in aerodynamic analysis, particularly for aircraft design and atmospheric reentry vehicles.
