Hypersonic
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002950
Relating to flight speeds of Mach 5 or greater, which is five times the speed of sound. At these velocities, the air flowing around a vehicle becomes extremely hot due to compression and friction, leading to chemical dissociation of air molecules and creating unique aerodynamic challenges. The North American X-15 was an early experimental hypersonic aircraft, reaching a top speed of Mach 6.7.
