Unstable air mass

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009898

A large body of air characterized by a tendency for vertical motion and convective activity. This occurs when the air mass has a steep lapse rate, meaning temperature decreases rapidly with altitude. Such air masses often lead to the formation of cumuliform clouds, showers, and thunderstorms as rising air parcels continue to ascend due to buoyancy.
