Elve

A transient luminous event occurring high above thunderstorms, characterized by a rapidly expanding, ring-shaped emission of light. These events are caused by electromagnetic pulses from lightning discharges that excite nitrogen molecules in the ionosphere. Elves typically appear as a diffuse, reddish glow and last for less than a millisecond.
