Sheet lightning

A diffuse illumination of the sky from a distant lightning discharge where the individual lightning channel is not visible. This phenomenon occurs when the lightning flash is either too far away or obscured by clouds or terrain. It often appears as a broad, soft glow that flickers across the horizon during thunderstorms.
