Sprite

A two-dimensional bitmap image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene, such as in a video game or graphical user interface. Sprites are rendered independently of the background and can be moved, scaled, or rotated without affecting other graphical elements. Modern graphics hardware includes dedicated processing capabilities for compositing multiple sprite layers, a technique that was foundational to 2D gaming on consoles from the 1970s onward.
