Global circuit
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005996
A conceptual model describing the continuous flow of electrical current through the Earth's atmosphere, driven by thunderstorms acting as generators. Positive charge flows from the tops of thunderstorms into the ionosphere, then spreads globally and returns to the Earth's surface in fair weather regions. The total current is estimated to be around 1000 to 1800 amperes.
